Ali had been waiting patiently for five years for a letter to arrive, from his estranged daughter Miriam, providing him news of her well-being . When the letter failed to arrive, Ali gave a few gold coins to Lakshmi Das, a clerk in the Post Office. In return of the money, Ali extracted a promise from the clerk that when the letter from Miriam finally arrived, he would lay it on Ali's grave so that his father's soul would be finally laid to rest.
