Answer:

Hold the tip of the pen to a flame for a few seconds to unclog the ink. Use a lighter, match, or candle to create a flame, then place just the very tip of your pen in the flame for a few seconds. In many cases, the heat will melt any gummed-up ink near the tip and get the pen working again.

Answer:

Why do pens/biros always run out despite still having visible signs of ink still left in them and how do I get the ink flowing again?

If you have to write reliably, the very first thing you always do is run the tip over some scrap paper to remove any dried ink encrusting the tip. Also, store ballpoints tip down. Until the pen is near empty, nothing else is necessary.

The ink in a ballpoint pen is very syrupy at room temperature. It sticks better to solid objects than it does to itself. Because of this, the ink in the middle of the refill tube is more likely to flow to the tip than the ink around the sides. The latter is stuck to the tube. That’s why a mostly empty refill still looks part full if the refill is transparent.

To get the remaining ink, I recommend shaking the pen like an old-fashioned thermometer, with the tip of the pen pointing outwards. The centrifugal force you generate drives the ink towards the tip after about ten shakes. It’s by far the quickest way to force ink to the tip.

A more dangerous way is to heat up the refill since this liquifies the ink. Don’t do it!! A plastic refill will ignite and the fumes are toxic. Worse yet, there are some metal barrels that are sealed and pressurized. You risk your vision or even your life if the barrel explodes!

If you do a lot of hand writing, it pays to always keep spare refills nearby. They are best kept capped and in a tight container. Otherwise, you won’t like what happens after they’ve leaked into your purse or pocket!
