let the added number be 'a'

therefore, 3x + y + a = 2x + 3y

a = 2x - 3x + 3y - y

a = -x + 2y

Let the no. to be added = a

(3x + y) + a = (2x + 3y)

a = (2x + 3y) - (3x + y)

a = 2x + 3y - 3x - y

a = 2x - 3x + 3y - y

a = -x + 2y

-x + 2y is to added
