1 and 0 must be added to the numerator and denominator respectively.
 \frac{3 + 1}{5 + 0} =  \frac{4}{5}.

Let the number be x .

 \frac{3 + x}{5 + x}  =  \frac{4}{5} \\  \\ 5(3 + x) = 4(5 + x) \\  \\ 15 + 5x = 20 + 4x \\  \\ 5x - 4x = 20 - 15 \\  \\ x = 5
So the number is 5.
