When the Mughal authority began to decline, many governors and rulers who accepted the Mughal as their overlord began to establish themselves as victorious rulers and expanded their territories. They now no longer accepted the Mughal descendants as their overlords. However, due to the long rule of the Mughals people still followed the rules setup by the Mughals. Some dynasties were vaniquished while the remaining ruled. We can see that many small kingdoms are emerging as states. What to note is that while many of these kingdoms were ruled by able monarchs, there was a half democracy in areas near Nepal. The king was selected through a race on a mountain anually. The king had all the powers but if he had to consolidate his position, he had to win the race every year.
