Answer :-

  • 1/10 should be added to -3/5 to get -1/2.

To find :-

  • The number which when added to -3/5 gives -1/2.

Solution :-

Let the required number be "x".

  • One of the numbers is -3/5.

It is given that :-

  • When "x" is added to -3/5, we get -1/2.

Therefore,

  \longmapsto\tt\dfrac{ - 3}{ \:  \:  \: 5}  + x =  \dfrac{ - 1}{ \:  \:  \: 2}

Transposing -3/5 from LHS to RHS, changing it's sign,

 \longmapsto\tt x =  \dfrac{ - 1}{ \:  \:   \: 2}  -  \dfrac{ - 3}{ \:  \:  \: 5}

Taking the LCM of 2 and 5,

 \longmapsto\tt x =  \dfrac{( - 1 \times 5) -  (- 3 \times 2)}{10}

 \longmapsto\tt x =  \dfrac{ - 5 + 6}{ \:  \: 10}

 \longmapsto\tt x =  \dfrac{1}{10}

-----------------------------------------------------------

Verification :-

  • To check our answer, let's add 1/10 to -3/5 and see whether we get -1/2.

 \longmapsto \bf\dfrac{ - 3}{ \:  \:  \: 5}  +  \dfrac{1}{10}

Taking the LCM of 5 and 10,

  \longmapsto\bf\dfrac{ (- 3 \times 2) + (1 \times 1)}{10}

 \longmapsto \bf\dfrac{ - 6 + 1}{10}

 \longmapsto\bf \dfrac{ - 5}{ \: 10}

Reducing the fraction to it's simplest form,

 \longmapsto\bf\dfrac{ - 1}{ \:  \:  \: 2}

 \\

We get :-

  • -1/2 on adding 1/10 to -3/5.

Hence verified!
