James has already explained that there are infinitely many rational numbers between any two (distinct) rationals.

However you may have only meant “how do you find a rational number between 5/8 and 11/12”.

The problem is to compare a number of eighths with a number of twelfths, so you need to get them into a form where they are comparable.

8 is 2 x 4 and 12 is 3 X 4, so if you convert them to 24ths (that's 6 x 4) it will be eady to compare them.

5/8 is 15/24 and 11/12 is 22/24, so 16/24, 17/24 … 21/24 will all work.

You need to simplify those again though. For example we wouldn't normally write a fraction as 16/24 because that is more simply written as 2/3. They both represent the same rational number of course, but the simplest form without having a common divisor between the numerator (number at the top) and the denominator (the number underneath) is best
