Let the number to be added be a

So, the fraction becomes,

2 + a:5 + a = 5:6

= 2 + a = 5

5 + a 6

On cross multiplying, we have

12 + 6a = 25 + 5a

6a − 5a = 25 − 12

∴a = 13

∴ the number added is 13.
