what number must be added to 8,12,14,and 20 to get the number which are in priportional

let the no. added be X
so (8+X):(12+X)::(14+X):(20+X)

as we know product of means = product of extremes .

so,
(12+X)(14+X) = (8+X)(20+X)
168+12x+14x+x² = 160+8x+20x+x²
168+26x+x² = 160+28x+x²
168-160 + x²-x² = 28x-26x
8 = 2x
8/2 = X
4 = X

hence, the number added to the following numbers is 4

so,
(8+X):(12+X)::(14+X):(20+X) =
(8+4):(12+4)::(14+4):(20+4)
12:16::18:24
