The number must be added to each of the numbers 7, 16, 43 and 79, so that the  new numbers are in proportion is 5.

Step-by-step explanation:

To find : What number must be added to each of the numbers 7, 16, 43 and 79, so that the  new numbers are in proportion?

Solution :

Let the number be 'x'.

Then the new numbers are 7+x,16+x,43+x,79+x.

The  new numbers are in proportion then

\frac{7+x}{16+x}=\frac{43+x}{79+x}

Cross multiply,

(7+x)(79+x)=(43+x)(16+x)

Solve,

553+7x+79x+x^2=688+43x+16x+x^2

553+86x=688+59x

86x-59x=688-553

27x=135

x=\frac{135}{27}

x=5

Therefore, the number must be added to each of the numbers 7, 16, 43 and 79, so that the  new numbers are in proportion is 5.
