7

Let x be the number to be subtracted.

Given,

  • Original ratio = 17 : 33
  • New ratio = 7 : 15

(17 - x)/(33 - x) = 7/15

⇒ 15(17 - x) = 7(33 - x)

⇒ 255 - 15x = 231 - 7x

⇒ 255 = 231 + 8x

⇒ 24 = 8x

⇒ x = 3

The number subtracted = 3.

Let the number to be subtracted be x .

 \rm \longrightarrow \dfrac{17 - x}{33 - x} = \frac{7}{15} \\ \\ \rm \longrightarrow 15(17 - x) = 7(33 - x) \\ \\ \rm \longrightarrow255 - 15x = 231 - 7x \\ \\ \rm \longrightarrow24 = 15x - 7x \\ \\ \rm \longrightarrow8x = 24 \\ \\ \rm \longrightarrow \bf x = 3
