let the number to be subtracted be x

The numbers become 15-x and 23-x

ATP,

(15-x)/(23-x)=7/15

15(15-x)=7(23-x)

225-15x=161-7x

15x-7x=225-161

8x=64

x=64/8

x=8

The number to be subtracted is 8
