Let the number to be added be x
then (8 + x) : (11 + x) = 4 : 5
(8 + x) / (11 + x) = 4 / 5
Cross multiplication
5 (8 + x) = 4 (11 + x)
40 + 5x = 44 + 4x
5x - 4x = 44 - 40
x = 4
Answer the number 4 has to be added to each term to make ratio 8 : 11 to 4: 5
