Let the number be x.

Therefore,

[tex] \frac{ - 5}{8}  + x =  \frac{ - 3}{2}  \\ x =  \frac{ - 3}{2}  +  \frac{5}{8}  \\  x = \frac{ - 12 + 5}{8}  \\ x =  \frac{ - 7}{8} [/tex]
