hence,

( 12 + x)/ (22 + x) = (42 + x)/ (42+ x)

By cross multiplication,we get

(12 + x) (42+x) = (42+ x) (22+ x)

54x + 504 = 84x + 1764

84x - 54x = 1764-504

30x = 1260

x = 1260/30

x = 42

Therefore the number is 42...so that the resultant number are in proportion.
