Answer:

Let the number be = x

The numbers become = 5 + x, 9 + x, 17 + x, 24 + x

If these are in proportion, then:

(5 + x)/(9 + x) = (17 + x)/(24 + x)

=> (5 + x)(24 + x) = (17 + x)(9 + x)

=> 120 + 5x + 24x + x^2 = 153 + 17x + 9x + x^2

=> 120 + 29x = 153 + 26x

=> 3x = 33

=> x = 11
