Bonjour!!

Let the number be x

1/3 - x = -5/12
-x = -5/12 - 1/3
-x = -5 - 4/12
-x = -9/12
-x = -3/4
x = 3/4

#QUESTION#

what number should be subtracted from 1/3 so as to get -5/12

#ANSWER#

Let us suppose that the number is x

Now this number has to be subtracted from 1/3 .

After subtracting the difference is -5/ 12

So!!

Let's form an equation as per the question

The equation is as following

 \frac{1}{3}  - x =  \frac{ - 5}{12}  \\  \\  \frac{1}{3}  +  \frac{5}{12}  = x \\  \\  \frac{4 + 5}{12}  = x \\  \\   \frac{9}{12}  = x \\  \\  \frac{3}{4}  = x

So . The number is 3/4

Thanks
