Concept:

First replace the unknown number or quantity by a variable and then form a suitable mathematical equation or relation using the given conditions, on solving which we get the required value or quantity.

Given:

An unknown number is subtracted from -2/3 and we get -1/2.

Find:

The above unknown number which should be subtracted from -2/3 to get -1/2.

Solution:

Given that subtracting an unknown number from -2/3 we get -1/2.

Let that unknown number be x.

So according to condition we get a suitable mathematical equation,

-2/3 - x = -1/2

-x = 2/3 - 1/2

-x = (2*2-1*3)/6 , since LCM of 2,3 = 6

-x = (4-3)/6

-x = 1/6

x = -1/6

Hence -1/6 should be subtracted from -2/3 in order to get -1/2.
