Let the number be x.

 3\dfrac{1}{4}  - x = 1 \dfrac{5}{7}

 x = 3\dfrac{1}{4} -  1 \dfrac{5}{7}

 x = 3\dfrac{1 \times 7}{4 \times 7} -  1 \dfrac{5 \times 4}{7 \times 4}

 x = 3\dfrac{7}{28} -  1 \dfrac{20}{28}

 x = 2\dfrac{35}{28} -  1 \dfrac{20}{28}

 x = 1\dfrac{15}{28}

 \boxed {\text {Answer: } 1\dfrac{15}{28} }

Let the number be x.

 3\dfrac{1}{2} - x = 1 \dfrac{5}{7}

 x = 3\dfrac{1}{2} - 1 \dfrac{5}{7}

 x = 3\dfrac{1 \times 7}{2 \times 7} - 1 \dfrac{5 \times 2}{7 \times 2}

 x = 3\dfrac{7}{14} - 1 \dfrac{10}{14}

 x = 2\dfrac{21}{14} - 1 \dfrac{10}{14}

 x = 1\dfrac{11}{14}

 \boxed {\text {Answer: } 1\dfrac{11}{14} }
