the Enfield rifle which was introduced in 1856 one of the immediate cause for the revolt of 1857 to start the Indian sepoys believe that the cartridge of the Enfield rifle which which had to be bitten off before every use were greased with animal fat which hurted the religious sentiment of both the Hindu and Muslim so they refused to use these cartridge.

The loading process of the Enfield rifle involved bringing the cartridge to the mouth and biting of the top paper. both Hindus and Muslims sepoys were offended by the instruction of these cartridges. there religious sentiment have affected and this was the reason they refused to offset the cartridges. they felt that the British were trying to insult their religion.
