The enfield rifle which was introduced in 1856 were one of the immediate causes for the revolt of 1857 to start.The Indian sepoys believed that the cartridge of the enfield rifle which had to be bitten off before every use were greased with animal fat which hurted the religious sentiments of both the hindus and the muslims. So they refused to use these catridges.
