Meaning:

This seal of Shivaji, the son of Shahaji, increasing in size like the moon of Pratipada (the first day after the moonless night), revered by the world, reigns for good.

Apart from the profound and poetic text of the seal, the choice of language is also noteworthy. Before Shivaji, the seals of Marathas were in Persian - even those of his father and mother. But he started a new cultural trend, which was emulated wholesale by his descendants and officials as well. The choice of Sanskrit was a deliberate harkening to one’s Hindu roots.

Shivaji was an extremely clever man who knew that domination has many aspects apart from military and economic one. He focussed on the cultural aspect as well, apart from the other two. As a result, the Marathas were very secure in their cultural identity and looked with greatly renewed pride towards Hinduism.

Thank you.......
