Plasmolysis is the phenomenon by which plant cell loses water and the protoplasm moves away from the cell wall and a gap is created between the cell wall and the cell membrane.
In some plasmolysed bacterial cells, this space remained empty though these cells are connected with other cells through protoplasmic extensions.
