♧ Shadow ♧

When an opaque object is placed between a source of light and a screen, it blocks the path of the light, forming a dark area on the screen. This dark area is called shadow of that object.

♧ Conditions for the formation of a shadow ♧

For the formation of a shadow, we must have :

• a source of light

• an opaque object to obstruct the path of light

• an opaque screen to obtain the shadow

♧ Characteristics of a shadow ♧

1. A shadow is always a dark area. It does not show the colour of the object:

Take objects of different colours and observe their shadows on a wall. You will see that no matter what the colour of the object is, the shadow is always black ( some portions may be gray )

2. A shadow can only be formed on a screen

♧ Activity ♧

To show that a shadow can be formed only on a screen

Keep an object against an open window at night in a dark room. Make sure that there is nothing behind the object. Flash a beam of light on the object. Do you observe any shadow in the air? Open the curtains behind the object. Can you now see the shadow of the object?

When there was nothing behind the object, we observed a shadow, on the other hand, when the curtains behind the object were opened, we didn't observed a shadow. Therefore, we can say that, a shadow can be formed only on a screen.
