The life cycle of silkworm completes in the following four phases:
Egg: The female lays about 300 to 400 eggs in clusters upon mulberry leaves. Egg-laying is completed in 1-24 hours. The female dies after 3-4 days after laying eggs. Eggs turn into larva in 10 to 12 days.
Larva: A silk moth passes through five stages during the larva phases of its life. The five stages are called instars. The first instar is grey in colour and the body consists of 12 segments. After 4-5 days it becomes inactive and it moults. It moults several times and after each moult instar grows. The cocoon forms around the body of larva as it produces sticky fluid and fluid dries.
Pupa: The pupa is inactive stage in which the body protected in a cocoon undergoes very important active change called metamorphosis. This stage completes in 12 to 14 days.
Adult: After active metamorphosis, the pupa changes into adult imago. The imago breaks cocoon and survives for 5-6 days. In this way the life cycle of silk moth completes in 45-50 days
