Mixedfarming: Mixed farming is one which cropproduction is combined with the rearing of livestock. The live stock enterprises are complementary to crop production; so as to provide a balance and productive system of farming.
Advantages:
1. It offers highest return on farm business, as the by products of farm are properly utilized.
2. It provides work throughout year.
3. Efficient utilization of land, labour, equipment and other resources.
4. The crop by products such as straw, bus, fodder etc. is used for feeding of livestock and in return they provide milk.
5. Manures available from livestock maintain soil fertility.
6. It helps in supplying all the food needs of the family members.
7. Intensive cultivation is possible.
8. If one source of income is lost he can maintain his family from other source of income.

"The practice of growing two or more crops at the same time in a field is called mixed cropping"
It has been practiced by our farmers for a long time in order to avoid total crop failure when there is little or no rainfall Some crops which are grown together are as follows :-
- wheat and chickpea or wheat and mustard
- maize and urad bean.
- soybean and pigeonpea (red gram)
- barley and chickpea
- jowar and pigeonpea
- groundnut and sunflower
Importance of mixed cropping :-
- Growing crops with different requirements minimizes the risk of Crop failure if the shortage of nutrients or water makes it difficult for one crop to grow The other might still yield a good harvest.
- Usually a cereal crop is grown with a leguminous crop like beans ,peas and gram the nitrogen fixing bacteria in the roots of leguminous plants improve the fertility of the soil by converting atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogenous nutrients and which benefit the crop plants this increase the crop yield and help maintain the fertility of the soil.
