Van Helmont's conclusion after his experiment was after the 5 years the amount of soil weighed the same amount, and that the willow tree gained weight by the water that was being added daily. He was wrong because the willow tree got its nutrients and energy not only from water, but also from Co2. This is relevant to what we now know because Van Helmont thought that the willow tree would use material from the soil to grow, but it was actually the water and the CO2 which made the tree grow.
