The reader get the impression that the countryside would be black and dull place. The wilderness beyond the churchyard creates a felling of loneliness and dullness

The description of the countryside adds to the general atmosphere as pip was in a churchyard visiting the graves of his parents and brothers which is not happy place to be. The graveness of the churchyard is continued in the description of the countryside.
