Oxygen is more electronegative than xenon, so its oxidation state is −2.

  • Fluorine is the most electronegative of the elements, so its oxidation state is −1.

  • The XeOF4 molecule is neutral, so the sum of oxidation states of all elements must be 0.

  • Thus, Xe+O+4F = Xe+(−2)+4(−1)=0 and therefore Xe=+2+4=+6.

The oxidation state of xenon is +6.
