Answer:
Antonio is the pivotal character round whom the action of the play woven and lends his title to the drama. Had he not been such an ardent Christian as to incite Shylock to attempt on his life by catching him upon the hip by signing the life threatening bond, the drama would have not have been written. Keeping with the spirit of this drama of this dark comedy he is melancholic. Except for his extreme love for Bassanio and zealous Christianity, he is generous, loving and lovable. Shakespeare doesn't draw him in finer sketches but in bare outlines. As the curtain falls he remains as he had been a confirmed bachelor and consummate bachelor but not poor any longer.
