Answer:

The tissue that is most frequently donated and transplanted is the cornea. The cornea is a contact lens sized, clear piece of tissue in the front of the eye.

However sometimes we also recover conjunctiva and sclera.

Conjunctiva is a clear covering over the eye globe that goes from the cornea outward. When you get pink eye- this is what is inflamed. Conjunctiva is usually recovered for research purposes.

Sclera is the white area of your eye. This is recovered for transplant. It is usually used in repair of impaled eyes, or for attaching realistic prosthetics . I believe they are used to attach to the muscles of the recipient so the prosthetic moves like the undamaged eye. Sclera can also be used for ear drum repair!

People also donate their whole eyes for research and education. Disease of the eye, like macular degeneration and glaucoma, will someday have a cure.

When you donate your eye tissue, or whole eyes, you can still have a funeral viewing. We will put in an ‘eye cap’ under the lids, that retain the natural shape. If you are having a viewing and you did not donate your eyes, most funeral homes will still use an eye cap.

During eye donation, mostly the whole eye ball is donated. If that the most important part is the cornea(front transparent part of eye). Cornea is the part which is transplanted. The rest of the eyeball is rarely used.
