The adjustment of the lens for near and far vision is known as accommodation. This is necessary because light needs to be focused on the fovea for clear vision.
When the light rays from a distant object enter the eye, the ciliary muscles relax, causing the suspensory ligaments to tighten. This tightening causes the lens to stretch, becoming less convex.
When light rays from a near object enter the eye, the ciliary muscles contract, causing the suspensory ligaments to slacken and the lens to bulge, becoming more convex.
