The International Olympic Association held Tommie Smith and John Carlos guilty of violating the Olympic spirit by making a political statement.
Their medals were taken back. They were subjected to a lot of criticism in their own country. Peter Norman, the Australian athlete, also suffered for his action and he was not included in the Australian team for the next Olympic.
