According to a survey conducted in 2014 about 73% of the population in mainland China can speak and understand Mandarin. While in the “past century” the percentage was only 53.06%.

The report also added that “all 36 type-1 cities have met the standard, and in 80% of the type-2 cities the assessment was completed”.
