The problem with the periodisation of Indian history by James Mill is that he divided the Indian history into Hindu, Muslim and the British period. It has been argued by many historians that it is not correct to periodise the Indian history on the basis of religion of the rulers.

The historians were against it because James mill divided the periods on the basis of the religions of the king's depicting that the religion ,culture and customs of other people didn't matter .Also all the rulers were not hindu in the period which he named hindu period same for muslim period...India has a very rich and diverse culture and dividing it on the basis of a single religion is not justified
