Hey,

Each electron is an atom is designated by 4 quantum numbers:

1) Principal Quantum Number

It describes the shell, determines the size of orbital and energy of electron in it.

Where n = 1 → k shell n = 2 → l shell n = 3 → m shell Number of allowed orbitals is n2

2) Azimuthal Quantum Number

It determines the sub-shell and the shape of the orbital.

It can have the values , l= 0, 1, 2, 3 ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ Sub shell notations S p d f
Example: n=1 l=0 → 1s n=2 l=0,1 →2s,2p n=3 l= 0,1,2 →3s,3p,3d

3) Magnetic Quantum Number (Ml)

It refers to different orientation of orbitals in space and number of orbitals in each sub shell.

It can have the values : Ml = -l . 0. +l
Examples : s sub shell l=0 ; Ml = 0 → 1 orbital p sub shell l=1 ; Ml = -1,0,1 → 3 orbitals d sub shell l=2 ; Ml= -2,-1,0,1,2 → 5 orbitals f sub shell l=3 ; Ml = -3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3 → 7 orbitals

4) Spin Quantum Number (Ms)

It refers to the orientation of the spin of electrons. It is represented as spin up ↑and spin down ↓(clock-wise and anti clock- wise)

It can have the values +1/2 or -1/2

HOPE IT HELPS:-))
