At its simplest, Philosophy (from the Greek word 'philosophia', meaning ‘the love of wisdom’) is the study of knowledge. As used originally by the ancient Greeks, the term "philosophy" meant the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, and comprised ALL areas of speculative thought, including the arts, sciences and religion. It is a system of ideas about human nature and the nature of the reality we live in. It is considered as a guide for living, because the issues it addresses are basic and pervasive, determining the course we take in life and how we treat other people. Those who study philosophy are perpetually engaged in asking, answering, and arguing for their answers to life's most basic questions. To make such a pursuit more systematic, academic philosophy is divided into several major areas of study.
"Philosophy studies the fundamental nature of existence, of man, and of man's relationship to existence. … In the realm of cognition, the special sciences are the trees, but philosophy is the soil which makes the forest possible." — Ayn Rand , Philosophy, Who Needs It (p. 2)
