France had major financial issues when Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette came into power. Marie used massive amounts of money, constantly buying different gowns and shoes, along with buying her own countryside home at one point. Not only that, but France was helping the Americans out with the Revolutionary world in order to show their power to the world, especially the British. The monarchy had a lot of debt, which led to them raising the taxes. This led the people to become poor and starving, while Marie and Louis bathed in their riches and cakes. But actually, when Marie Antoinette heard that her citizens needed bread, she never said "Qu'ils man gent de la brioche"— "Let them eat cake." Marie actually cared a lot for the poor, so it was very unlikely that she actually spoke those words. The French citizens were still upset about being poor and starving though, which lead to a group of protesters breaking into the Palace of Versailles and taking Louis XVI along with Marie Antoinette. Around ten thousand people came to watch the royals die along with the monarchy. Apparently Louis met his fate— which was getting his head chopped off obviously— calmly. Ten months later, Marie followed Louis's fate and her head was chopped off. The king of France during the old Regime. Was a weak king and was executed. He preferred making laws. He was a reluctant ruler. He lived in the shadow of his grandfather. He was seen as an indecisive, weak ruler, even by the poor. He dealt with personal and cultural factors that impeded his masculinity.
