Crush the ice, place it in the beaker of water and leave there for approximately 20 minutes (until it begins to melt at 0˚C). Use a thermometer to measure the temperature.

Ice should be dry before using for melting point determination. The bulb of the thermometer should be dipped in ice and should be surrounded on all sides with ice. Temperature should be measured by keeping eyes in line with the level of mercury
