1. The thermometer should be washed before and after use, preferably with an antiseptic solution.
2. Ensure that before use the mercury level is below 35-degree celsius.
3. Read the thermometer keeping the level of mercury along the line of sight.
4. handle the thermometer with care. If it hits against some hard object, it can break. 
5. Do not hold the thermometer by the bulb while reading it

Hold the thermometre's stem at eye level and rotate it gently until you see the mercury Column.

Read the number where the end point of the mercury column rests to note the temperature.For Example,the thermometre shown alongside reads 37.4°C.
