The shoot must be held in contact with the water; additionally, the surface of the water should not be exposed to the air. Otherwise, evaporation will interfere with measurements. A rubber bung greased with petroleum jelly suffices.

Precautions while using a Potometer are -

1 ) The Potometer should be made completely water - tight .

2 ) The twig must be cut obliquely ( to allow larger surface for the water intake ) and under water to avoid suction of an air bubble into the twig which will stop the absorption of water into the Xylem .
