In the short story, "how far is the river", there was a boy who had heard many stories about a beautiful river which was located deep into the mountains. To be able to see it, a long distance must be traveled especially there would be a point where no humans would be in sight anymore.

The "mountains" prevented the boy from being able to see the river in the first place.

Upon hearing the stories of others the boy became eager and wanted to see the river for himself which is why he started travelling.
