________
The general methods to control non chordate stored grain pests (especially insect pest) are much in common. Similar preventive, physical and preservative methods are used for almost all the insects, mites and arachnid pests however; biological method of control may vary in different species.
Preventive Measures:
1. Threshing yard should be situated more than a mile away from the granaries so as to reduce the chance of pest reaching to granaries through migration.
2. Transport vehicles like trucks, railway wagons, ship holds, tractors, bullock carts etc. are usually found to have infected grains in their crevices which are a source of pest infestation to the transporting grains. So, before transportation of grains, the transporting vehicles should be thoroughly cleaned.
Electric vaccum cleaners give much better result as compared to ordinary brooms and brushes. After cleaning, the transporting vehicles should be treated with suitable insecticides and disinfectants.
3. For bag storage of grains “pucca” cement concrete or brick made store houses are recommended. For bulk storage cement concrete “Khattis” made underground or above ground is the choic.
4. Storage in airtight bins helps maintaining insect free grains.
5. Before use, the go downs (stores) should be cleaned of all dirt, rubbish, webbing and refuse materials. All cracks, crevices, holes in wall, floor or ceiling should be filled with cement. Uneven floor, wall or ceiling should be brought to level. The store should preferably white washed before storing grains:
6. Before storing grains the go downs (store houses) should be disinfected. Following methods of disinfestations of store rooms are recommended
7. Impregnation of jute sacks prior to storing grains with DDT, Dieldrine-Lindane combination or Malathion-Lindane combination have been found quite effective to keep pest away, but large scale use of this method and possible subsequent pollution effect should be kept under consideration.
Hope' This Helps

The preventive measure should be taken before storage of grains are :
♦ The grains must be dried in sun for days to remove the moisture present in the grains. It is done because where moisture is there grains have a chance of being affected by microbes.
♦ The grains should be kept along with neem leaves while storage to prevent the affect of microbes.
♦ The grains should be sprayed with pesticides and fungicides to prevent the affect of pests and fungi.
