1)Remarrage of widows was a rare phenomenon.
2)Practice of sati was very common.
3)Maximum of the times the widows burnt themselves on the funeral pyre of their husbands.
4)The women who didn't do so, their heads were shoven off,they weren't allowed to attend any family or social functions and were often treated as servants.
Raja Rammohun Roy led movement in favour of widow remarrage and education of girls
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar persuaded the british officials to pass law for enforcement of widow remarrage and banning polygamy. He opened 35 schools for girls in bengal with his own money.
