During festivals and weddings, widows were shunned and forbidden from remarriage. On such times, their presence was regarded as unlucky omen. Hindu ladies were married off at a fairly young age in the 19th century. The women were compelled to leap into their husbands' funeral pyres after their husbands passed away because widow remarriage was typically prohibited at that time. This practise was known as sati. The widow was forced to be burned at the stake alongside her husband. In India, he was highly widespread.

The two reformers who made an effort to assist widows were

Raja Ram Mohan Roy- Through his publication Sambad Kaumudi, he organised a campaign against the sati custom.

In Calcutta in 1856, the first Hindu widow remarriage took place thanks in large part to Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.
