As we know that it was not easy for South Africa to gain independence from Britain.
In South Africa there was the system of apartheid according to which the people were divided into different groups according to the colour of their skin ( blacks, whites and coloured). The Blacks and the coloured were not allowed to live in white areas, they could only work if they had a permit to do so. Trains, busses, taxis, hotels, hospitals were different for the blacks and the whites.
Since 1950 the blacks, Coloured and some whites fought for independence in South Africa.
The ANC (African National Congress) was the umbrella organisation for the freedom struggle.
Finally, on 26 April 1994 South Africa became independent and Nelson Mandela became its first president.
