Sri Lankan Tamils had to bear the tyranny of the majority Sinhalese speakers. Their culture, language and traditions were utterly disregarded by the government. They were not given equal opportunities to find jobs at universities and other government institutions. The government took a series of majoritarian measures. All this presented a problem to Sri Lankan Tamils as they felt disrespected and humiliated.
