In this reaction carried at high temperature, allyl chloride chloride (3-chloropropenen) is formed by free radical mechanism as follows:

Addition of Cl2 is also expected on the double bond. But at this high temperature, the dichloro derivative formed cleaves to lose a molecule of Cl2 and the reaction becomes reversible in nature. therefore, only allylic chlorination takes place i this reaction.
