What provoked the grand mother to decide to learn the kannada alphbet?

The grandmother was fond of listening to the weekly episode of the novel 'kashiyatre'. once her grand daughter who used to read it for her went to attend a marriage for about a week.the serial came and the grandmother tried to read it but being illiterate she couldn't. she felt dependent and sad and also realized the value of being literate and decided to learn the Kannada alphabets.
