Legend has it that Nur Jahan, known also as Mehrunnisa before she was given the title, was extremely beautiful. She was Jahangir’s friend throughout childhood, and eventually they fell in love. Later, she rejected his proposal for marriage, due to a sense of duty to his father and the royal household. But finally, she married him due to the fact that he was heartbroken and could not govern properly. He then gave her the title Nur Jahan, literally meaning Light of the World, or at least light of his world. They had a long and loving marriage until Jahangir died.
